02.19.13 PRO GUN BILL INTRODUCED, SCHRADER TO MEET WITH OBAMA ANTI-GUN ACTIVISTS

A bill many of you have heard about has finally been made available on the Legislative website. House Bill 3006  “Invalidates federal firearm laws in State of Oregon. ” Other states have introduced similar bills in an effort to stand up to the increasing incursions by the Feds into our liberties. We applaud the sponsors.

On the anti-gun side we are still waiting for the promised “assault weapon” ban and a bill to forbid Oregon citizens from having firearms in the Capitol building. Ginny Burdick announced her intentions to introduce this bill as a response to a recent rally where hundreds of armed people peacefully met on the Capitol steps and mall and some toured the building while in possession of guns. As police reported, there were “no incidents.”  Once again, the liberty haters look for a problem where one does not exist, and create a “solution” that makes no sense.

As many of you have painfully learned, the Oregon State Police have been “delaying” more and more firearms purchases. Sometimes for months. If you have had this experience, please see this page.

On another more immediate note, we have been informed  (and his office has confirmed) that Representative Kurt Schrader will be meeting tomorrow with representatives of  “Organizing for Action.”

This group is an offshoot of the Obama Presidential campaign and is planning numerous events across the country.  Currently their focus is on pushing the Obama/Biden gun grab. No doubt, that is the purpose of their meeting with Schrader.   Schrader has been non-commital on the issue of gun and magazine bans so “OFA” will be there attempting to twist his arm and demand he stay on the Democratic Reservation. Two of his Democrat colleagues, Bonamici and Blumenauer, are outspoken enemies of gun rights and a third, Peter DeFazio, tries to play both sides.  Clearly Schrader is being targeted by the far left because he has not yet agreed to plans to eviscerate the Second Amendment .

It is critical that Schrader hear from you. Please call him and tell him not to be intimidated by Obama’s troops and their fear mongering. You can call his office at (503)-557-1324 or if you prefer, you can fax him at (503) 557-1981. Unlike his webmail, calls and faxes can come from outside his district. Be short and to the point. NO NEW GUN RESTRICTIONS.

Thanks for your efforts.

02.11.13 Let the Games Begin

In our last alert we told you about a bill that was scheduled for a hearing on March 5 in House Judiciary.

The bill, HB 2605, did nothing more than extend the protections CHL holders have to retired law enforcement agents.

Oregon law allows retired police to carry without a permit, but they don’t have all the protections license holders have. For example, they cannot carry in public buildings.

Now we have been informed that Democratic leadership has yanked that bill out of committee and promised to try to move only anti-gun bills.

Whatever your position on gun rights, you have to find this to be an outrage. Most retired police don’t even know there are these limits and this bill extends NO new rights to anyone else.

The only person with the power to yank this bill  before it even gets a hearing is Speaker Tina Kotek. 503-986-1200

We’ll update you when we get more information, but right now it seems like the fix is in. Anti-gun bills only.

Stay tuned.

02.09.13 Weekend Update

Yesterday’s “Patriot Party” gun rights rally was another tremendous success. Different media outlets estimated the crowd from “several hundred” to a thousand. The latter is closer to the truth. “Everything’s going exactly as planned,” state police Lt. Terri Davie said. There are people walking through the building with weapons, but “there’s been no concerns.”

Imagine that. “No concerns.” Hundreds of men and women carrying firearms around and into the Capitol and there were “no incidents.” How can this be?  Where was the expected carnage? Where was the blood in the streets? After all, there were guns there! How do you suppose Burdick and the bed wetters from Ceasefire Oregon are going to spin this one?

Guns cause crime and violence, so how was this rally immune?  At one point Penny Okomoto and two other anti-freedom protestors stood on the Capitol steps, looking lonely.  But it made a point. These hypocrites begin every new diatribe with “most gun owners are law abiding” and “we don’t want to take anyone’s guns away.”  Yet at an event where hundreds of peaceful law-abiding gun owners are gathered to celebrate freedom, people like Okomoto and her deceitful cohorts (0ne of whom is pictured below) come to spread their message of hate.

Sad lonely protester

Several legislators came and spoke to the crowd, including pro-gun hero Kim Thatcher seen below.

Kim Thatcher

The event was pretty much an “open mike” situation and that created some odd moments, like when political gadfly Kevin Mannix stepped up to talk about the importance of gun rights, never mentioning his efforts to outlaw private sales of firearms at gun shows, or even your own home under some circumstances. Mannix will never overlook an opportunity for self promotion, but even he was treated respectfully.

To everyone who came by our table to say hello or join OFF, thank you! It was great seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Our thanks also to the folks who made it happen.

There is one gun related bill scheduled for a hearing so far. It is HB 2605 and currently due to be heard on March 5 at 1PM in House Judiciary. This bill addresses an anomaly in Oregon law. Currently, retired police officers are not required to have CHL’s in order to carry concealed. However, they are not afforded the same protections CHL holders have. For example, they may not carry in public buildings.  The bill seeks to correct this. The bill does not go as far as HB 2369 but we believe that the committee may be willing to incorporate the changes made in 2369. If you are retired law enforcement, or know someone who is, you may want to consider making your voice heard on this bill.

The Chairman of the Committee is Jeff Barker. Barker himself is a retired police officer and supportive of gun rights.

Remember, committee schedules change so be sure to double check the House Judiciary Committee schedule. You can find that here.

02.06.13 Gun Rights Update

Update On Gun Rights

The Oregon Legislature returned to work on Monday. From now on, anything can happen, so be prepared.

There are a few things you need to know.

While numerous Oregon Sheriffs (and actually, sheriffs nationwide)  have made it clear that they will oppose any attempts by the Obama administration to ram through dangerous and unconstitutional gun grabs, the Oregon Sheriff’s Association, as a group, has decided to take a dive.

In an email to Oregon’s sheriffs, the President of the OSA, Jason Myers, of Marion County, said the following about gun rights:

“After a very robust conversation on this issue it was the consensus of the Sheriffs present that our Association should not take a formal stance on this issue. At this meeting it was also agreed that I should reach out to US Attorney Amanda Marshall to notify her of our Association position and intent by the Sheriffs present to work collaboratively with our Federal partners’ agencies.”

This is a very troubling and dangerous position. The county sheriffs are the supreme law enforcement officers in their jurisdiction. For Myers to speak for all sheriffs and say they won’t “take a stance” on this issue and will “reach out” to the Feds who are working overtime to eliminate your rights is nothing short of frightening. The Sheriff’s Association, as an organization, has climbed in bed with the tyrants who want to disarm you and your family.

Voters in Clackamas County should also know that their sheriff, Craig Roberts, has waffled and played the politician with this response to our inquiry on his position on this issue:

“Thanks so much for taking the time to contact me. Though I have not made a public comment about my stance, I would like to let you know that I have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the State of Oregon, and I support all of the rights and freedoms that it guarantees. I am following the debate and meeting with other local leaders about this subject.”

What, exactly, does THAT mean?

Clearly lines are being drawn. The Department of “Homeland” Security has placed an order for 7000 machine guns which they call “personal defense weapons.” These are the guns that would be “assault weapons” if you owned them. (Which for all practical purposes you cannot, unless they were made before 1986 and you had a ton of money and approval from the Feds and your local chief law enforcement agent.)

The Social Security Administration is buying 174 thousand rounds of hollow point ammo. The Social Security Administration… really? Something is not right here. At the risk of overstating things, it’s clear that the government considers “we the people” to be a threat.

Please try to join us on Friday at the Capitol for a day to recognize the benefits of firearms ownership. The event is from 10 to 2 at the Capitol. Open, loaded, carry is legal there anywhere for CHL holders.

If you do not have a CHL, you may carry openly but NOT loaded. We have received many questions about this and please understand: we do NOT support these rules. We just want you to be informed.

Hope to see you there.

OFF ALERT 02.03.13 Session Starts, Rally Reminder

Session Starts and Rally Reminder

Happy Superbowl Sunday. May your favorite team win.

We have a number of things to share with you today.

First, the 2013 Oregon Legislative Session begins actual operations tomorrow. We expect to see a fairly large number of gun bills introduced in the coming days. As you may know, there is a link on our home page    that will take you to a list of any bills affecting gun owners.

If you think there is an important bill that is not posted, PLEASE let us know ASAP.

We will let you know when hearings are scheduled.  Showing up for these hearings is important.

Second, the pro gun rally on January 19 was a tremendous success and we want to thank the folks who put it together and everyone who showed up in defense of liberty. It was an amazing thing to see. We were overwhelmed by the support we received at that event and the many new members we signed up.

Because of that event, and other efforts by our friends across the state, OFF has grown dramatically. We have added staff  to keep up, and if you are a recent joiner, we want to thank you for your dedication and support.  We are a bit behind processing all the new members, so if you have not heard back from us or are awaiting a package with a book or hat or patch, rest assured we are working 7 days a week to get our thank you’s out to you.  Don’t hesitate to drop us a line if you think you have been missed. We will get someone right on it.

Finally and most important, a follow up rally will be held at the Capitol on Friday Feb. 8th from 10am to 2 pm.  Let’s make it even bigger and better than the last one.

All eyes are on New York where their legislature violated all their own rules to ram through a massive and unconstitutional gun ban in the middle of the night.  It’s clear that New Yorkers are not taking this lying down.  A big turn out on Friday will let our legislators know that Oregon will not stand for those kinds of games.

Reminder, “OPEN carry” is legal in Salem, however, if you do not have a concealed handgun license, LOADED carry is NOT legal. If you have any questions email us .

See you there.

OFF ALERT 01.24.13 GUN BAN ANNOUNCED

Dear Friend,

Forgive the length of this alert but there is a lot to talk about.

As you know, today Diane Feinstein announced her new gun ban legislation.
There are no surprises here. She wants to ban virtually everything. This is
something she has made no secret of in the past.

Her press conference today consisted of the all the same lies she and other
haters of liberty have been telling for years. Almost nothing said today was
even close to the truth, but let’s face it, that’s what  we were expecting.
(It’s interesting to note that Obama has murdered far more children,
including a least 2 American children, with Predator Drones, with NO
congressional oversight, than were murdered at Sandy Hook. )

Also today, on a web conference held by the White House, Joe Biden suggested
that the single best defensive firearm is a double barreled shotgun. This
would, of course, explain their popularity with law enforcement and the
military.

The National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban (of which OFF is a member) issued
a response to the proposed ban. Gary Marbut of the Montana State Shooting
Association has posted a version of it here:
http://progunleaders.org/Congress/

As you may have noticed, we have totally rebuilt OFF’s website. While there
may be a few bugs to work out (let us know if you see any) we think it will
be a much better online experience for anyone using the site.  This
transition was in the works long before the fertilizer hit the ventilator
and was not a quick transition.  We probably would not have chosen to make a
change of this magnitude had we known what was about to happen in the world
of gun rights, but we think in the long run this will be a benefit to all of
us.

OFF usually sends out one “renewal letter” a year asking folks to renew
their commitment to gun rights. In the past we have typically done this at
the end of the year or shortly after New Years. If you are a member of OFF
you may have noticed you did not receive that letter this year. You can
imagine why. We have had numerous members writing to find out if their
membership was “current.” If you believe what we are doing is worthy of your
support, of course we would be pleased if you would make a donation, but
under the circumstances we will most likely not be sending out a renewal
letter soon. There simply has not been time.

Since the Clackamas Town Center shooting and the atrocity at Sandy Hook, we
have been truly overwhelmed by new members and support from old friends.  We
have added staff to respond to the amazing number of people pledging help.

If you are a new joiner, I want to thank you for becoming part of this
fight, but as you might guess, we have had such enormous growth over the
last month and a half that we are working overtime to respond to
contributors and new members and frankly we are running a bit behind.  It
has always been our policy to respond to all communications, but especially
to new joiners and contributors, immediately. We have not been able to do
that recently.

If you recently joined and are due a patch or some other gift from us,
please rest assured they will be sent as soon as possible. Because of the
unexpected surge of membership there are things (like patches) we just flat
ran out of.  Everything is on order and it will be sent to you as soon as we
get it. We are grateful for your patience.

We want to remind you that another pro-gun rally will be held at the Capitol
on February 8th at 10 am.  If you were at the last one, you know what a
success it was. It would be great to make this one even bigger.

We’d also like to acknowledge all the people who have given 100% in this
battle and done more than we could have ever imagined to help OFF grow.

Northwest Armory in Milwaukie, OR has been amazing, not only in their
personal support but in their efforts to sign up new members for OFF.

Our friends at MK Tactical, Threat Dynamics and Blackstone Gun Safety
have all reached out to their friends and encouraged them to become part of
OFF and their help has been invaluable.

Talk show hosts  Bill Meyer (KMED in Medford)  Lars Larson (KXL Portland),
and Bill Post (KYKN Salem)  have been tireless supporters of both the Second
Amendment and Oregon Firearms Federation and we cannot thank them enough.

This is going to be a very challenging few months ahead. We we will be lied
to and about. We will be vilified and attacked.  But this battle is too
important to stand on the sidelines.  I look forward to working side by side
with you as we defeat any new assaults on liberty.

Many thanks,

Kevin Starrett

No Insignificant Acts. By E.D. A gun owner’s cautionary tale.

It never ceases to amaze me how an act as simple as answering the phone can act as the catalyst for a chain of events that would change someone’s life forever. We wander through life believing that we are immune to the effects of fate, not realizing that we are indeed part of a grand scheme, that everything we do has a cause and an effect. We are lulled into a false sense of security. Occasionally, we do something that blasts through the mundane security of our lives and thrusts us into the center of a maelstrom, changing us forever.

Something like answering the phone.

It was 1984. I was 22 years old. I had just been discharged from the Army ten months before and was working as a delivery driver for a local pizzeria.

Like the majority of people who serve in the military, I had never heard a shot fired in anger, or served in a combat zone. Being filled with the zeal that most young men possess, combined with three years spent as a US Army Paratrooper, I was frustrated. I knew that I didn’t want to re-enlist in the military, but I had no clear-cut plan for the future. In fact, I had no clear-cut plan for the next day.

I suppose that if I had to define the philosophy that I subscribed to at the time, I would have to classify it as a combination of chivalry and the code of the old west. I would not tolerate the abuse of women and I would remain loyal to the end to anyone who called me friend. Not only was I ready to go to the limit for my friends, I was eager for the chance to do so.

Unfortunately, sometimes you get exactly what you wish for.

I received a phone call from a friend who stated that she had been babysitting when her ex-boyfriend showed up and, in front of the children, had roughed her up. Though he had left, she didn’t want to be alone and asked if I could stay with her. She assured me that the police were aware of the situation and that she didn’t expect me to confront the individual; she just wanted the comfort of another person around. I had no romantic interest; indeed, I was seeing someone else. She had no desire to see anyone at all after breaking off with this man.

I told her that I would be there within the hour.

I had delivered pizza in some of the less savory neighborhoods in the city of Detroit. Even though we were instructed to carry no more than $20 on our person, delivery drivers from our store and others were robbed with frightening regularity. It was for this reason that I kept a pistol in my car. Ever mindful of the law, I kept it unloaded and in the trunk. I only carried it when a customer required change for an unusually large denomination or requested that I go to the back door. At that time, it never occurred to me to refuse a to go to a delivery that was considered “dangerous.”

I had acquired the pistol in one of the numerous sporting goods stores adjacent to my Army base in Georgia. I bought it because it was a commercial version of the M1911A1 pistol that was standard military issue at the time.

Because my friend said that this individual was violent, I decided to load the pistol and take it with me to the house. I certainly was not going to ‘hunt him down’ but as I had no idea as to just how violent he might become, I considered the gun to be prudent.

When I arrived at the house, I didn’t mention that I was armed. A quick survey of her injuries, while not as bad as I had envisioned, was still quite shocking. The man had apparently grabbed her by the hair and smacked her, then grabbed her by the arm and shook her, all the while shouting obscenities at her.

I explained that while I was not going to confront this person, I would not allow her to be further injured by him either. She thanked me for showing up and informed me that the children had been taken to a hockey game by their grandparents and would probably return in a couple of hours. Since their parents wouldn’t be home until late, she insisted that she had to be there when the children returned. I saw nothing wrong with this and agreed to stay until I was sure she was safe. I asked for a pop and she went to get it.

It was while she was in the kitchen that I heard someone out on the front porch. I didn’t have to look to know who it was. She made a quick call to 911, and we waited while he stomped around on the porch, yelling threats and obscenities. She told him that the police were on the way. He beat a hasty retreat. The police arrived after he left. A quick search of the area revealed nothing and they, in turn, left.

The phone rang.

He informed her that he was now at her house and was talking on her phone. She lived with an elderly grandfather whom the ex-boyfriend had threatened to hurt. She agreed to talk with him if he left the house immediately.

The grandfather got on the line to ask her what was going on. During their conversation, the ex-boyfriend appeared on the porch and demanded that she come out. She told her grandfather goodnight and made another call to the police. She refused to go on the porch. He was long gone by the time the police arrived.

By this time I was in conflict. I certainly didn’t want to get in the middle of their problems, but I also wasn’t going to abandon her to this person’s rage.

I decided that as long as he remained outside, and she remained inside, I would do nothing. If she stepped out the door to talk to him, thus placing herself in harm’s way, she was on her own. If he broke into the house, I would deal with that. Otherwise, this would be nothing more than a visit between friends.

We worked out a plan where, if he returned or called that she would agree to meet him the following day, to talk out this situation. She felt that this would be a good compromise. As if on cue, the phone rang again. He stated that he had no intention of harming her; he just wanted to talk. She asked him to meet her at a local restaurant the next morning.

Sitting several feet away, I could hear him shouting obscenities as if he were in the room with us. He stated that he knew that she had someone with her and that she was a whore. I took the phone from her and I told him that I was only there visiting and that this was unnecessary. He began verbally abusing me and I gave the phone back to her, not trusting myself to reply in a civilized manner.

She talked with him for a few minutes, crying all the while, and told him that she wanted nothing further to do with him. She hung up. Almost immediately the phone rang again. This time when she picked it up, she didn’t even get it to her ear, I heard him yelling,” That’s it you $%#@! I’ve got a gun, and me and my friends are coming over there to kill you and that *&%$#* you’re with!”

I would like to say that the idea leaving never entered my head, but I would be lying. While I knew that I could no more leave her there than I could fly, I suddenly began to doubt the wisdom of having answered the phone at all. My internal conflict was cut short by the sound of breaking glass.

What happened in the following seconds has done more to change me than anything that has happened before or since. I turned around to see the ex-boyfriend coming through the now broken front window. His progress was impeded since it was leaded glass and he had to bend the lead trim back to enter. I grabbed the woman and shoved her towards the bedroom, tossing the phone after her and yelling for her to call 911. The pistol seemed to leap into my hand as I ducked behind a wall, ever aware that he had a gun.

Whatever lessons I had absorbed in the Army now came to the fore. Realizing that if he got all the way into the house, it could get messy, I assumed the “ready position” both arms extended, muzzle pointed down and in front, finger off the trigger, and went forward towards him. I yelled for him to get back as I pointed the pistol at the center of his mass.

Upon seeing me, he reached under his jacket. Not wanting to give him the chance to use his gun, I fired twice, hitting him in the chest. He folded up and fell out the window. By this time, I was going on pure adrenaline. He had stated that he had friends coming with him and I went out the front door to meet them before they could get inside.

I ran down the steps, checking every direction for his friends. Probably only seconds passed, but it seemed much longer as the realization hit me that there was no one there. I went back up on the porch and looked at him lying inert. It was hard to see him as a person. To me he had only been a threat that needed to be eliminated. I went to him and, while holding the pistol , I searched him to relieve him of his weapons. Various instructors had told me that dead enemies often come back to life while you’re not looking and kill you.

I searched and searched and searched, becoming more and more frantic with each passing second because I COULDN”T FIND HIS WEAPON. It had to be there. He had reached for it. That was why I shot him. When I realized that he had been unarmed, I remember being filled with anger at him.

I walked back into the house, suddenly exhausted. I had killed a man.

The hours afterwards are a blur. I was taken downtown; allowed to make a phone call and put in a six by eight-foot cell that reeked of urine. During the course of the next several hours, I talked to my lawyer twice, the police once, and myself all night long.

At one point I attempted to pray to God, but I stopped mid sentence. I hadn’t prayed for years. I certainly hadn’t led a virtuous life plus I had just killed a man. How could I ask God to help me now? I had never felt so alone and lost in my entire life. All I can say is that God must have been listening anyway. Sixteen hours later, I was free as far as the court was concerned. Justifiable Homicide it was labeled. How could they know that I couldn’t justify it to myself?

My friends and family were all very supportive in the following days. Still, I felt that I was unclean. I felt that wherever I went, people would know that I was a murderer. To make matters worse, I later found out that, on the night of the shooting, my friend was already pregnant with his child.

For years I fought an internal battle. I waged a chemical war upon myself with drugs and alcohol to anesthetize the pain of guilt.

I withdrew, never allowing myself to become involved in a relationship that I couldn’t abandon without looking back. I wouldn’t allow even my family to get too close.

It is almost eleven years after the fact. I don’t think a single day has passed that I have not thought about that man or the child that I robbed of a father.

But recently, something has changed; I became acquainted with a man named Jesus Christ.

Through Him I have learned that I can go to school, I can love and be loved, and I can even be forgiven. I also keep an answering machine on my phone.

Postscript.
If life were like the movies, I suppose that I would have walked away from this incident feeling good about myself, and the woman I defended would be forever grateful to me. But, life isn’t a movie.

Two and a half years after the shooting, I was served with papers on behalf of the family of the deceased. I was being sued for negligent homicide.

As a result of the suit, I had to track down the woman again and ask her to testify on my behalf. When I finally found her, I learned a few things that had transpired since that night; first, she had gone on to have the baby. With no job, no money, and no family to support her, she decided that she would sue me for killing the father of her child. She consulted a lawyer, a friend of hers who, according to her said, “You called this guy to help you and now you want to sue him? There are some cases even lawyers won’t touch.” I guess that there are some honorable people left in the world, after all.

Later, the parents of the man I killed had approached her because they were trying to get the criminal case against me re-opened, and needed her to testify. She made them agree to sign an affidavit affirming their son’s paternity, which would enable her to collect Social Security for the child, in exchange for her testimony

. When she testified, the DA told the parents that there was no criminal case, and the matter was dropped. That left the civil courts.

To say that I was unprepared for the financial challenge of being sued is an understatement. I was working for $5.15 an hour at a factory, making engine manifolds,

I was living in Detroit’s inner city in a rented house, and I was driving a ten-year-old car. Coming up with $5000 for a lawyer wiped me out financially. When the case was settled, I was found liable for $3000.

My warning to all those that carry a firearm is this;
1. Make damned sure that you absolutely fear for your life or the life of your loved ones before you ever clear leather. The clearer it is that you were the victim, the faster that the criminal case will conclude in your favor.

2. Have a lawyer’s number handy. The time that you are involved in a shooting is not the time to find a lawyer. Look for someone that believes in the Second Amendment, or at least is not against citizens defending themselves.

3. Have someone who can be your advocate on the outside while you’re in jail waiting for the wheels of justice to grind. Everyone involved in the incident is going to be questioned by police. You will need someone that you can call who will contact your lawyer and your family to let them know what happened, and your job to let them know you won’t be in that day and probably the next.

4. Join an organization like OFF that will fight for your rights, and advise you on the latest developments regarding Concealed Carry. Your best weapon in defending yourself is your brain. Make sure that it is amply filled with reliable information.

01.16.13 OBAMA ANNOUNCES GUN GRAB, SHERIFFS SAY “NOT SO FAST”

Today Obama announced his proposals to punish law abiding gun owners in America, partly by bypassing Congress with executive orders and also with a push for a new ban on firearms and magazines.

This is the man who starts every speech with “no one wants to take your guns.”
His proposals include an end to private sales and greater Federal intrusions into mental health records.

As you no doubt know, Sheriff Tim Mueller of Linn County has written a letter to Joe Biden saying he would not enforce unconstitutional gun laws. According to KGW news, Crook County Sheriff Jim Hensley said Tuesday he sent the same letter to the Vice President.

Now Sheriff Glenn Palmer of Grant County has joined them. Things are going to get a lot more interesting.

To contact your own sheriff and tell him to get on board, use the map at the bottom of our CHL Central Page.

12.21.12 NRA CHANGES GEARS?

NRA CHANGES GEARS, FINALLY

After long opposing guns in schools by anyone but police, the NRA today held a press conference that implies they would support civilians in schools with guns. Although most of the press conference referred primarily to police officers :

I call on Congress today to act immediately, to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school — and to do it now,”

LaPierre’s speech seemed to leave the door open to train and encourage school staff to be armed as well:

“Is the press and political class here in Washington so consumed by fear and hatred of the NRA and America’s gun owners that you’re willing to accept a world where real resistance to evil monsters is a lone, unarmed school principal left to surrender her life to shield the children in her care?”

This is a long overdue and welcomed response by the National Rifle Association and mirrors what have been saying and suggesting since the Sandy Hook massacre.
Welcome aboard NRA.

12.20.12 NRA TO EMERGE FROM HIDING. SENATE PRESIDENT WANTS TO IMPOSE DEADLY CONNECTICUT “KILLING ZONES” IN OREGON

GET READY

Tomorrow, the NRA has stated, it will emerge from hiding and “make a statement” about the Connecticut massacre. If the past is any indication, the NRA will not be making a strong stand for the protection of Second Amendment rights. The NRA has long opposed allowing parents and teachers to be armed in schools, so don’t expect them to suggest we end the delusion of “gun-free schools.”

What is far more likely to happen is one more capitulation, one more compromise and one great step backward for liberty and logic. While we will certainly hope for the best, it would be wise to prepare to let the politicians know that you are not ready to sacrifice your rights and the safety of your family because one sick killer was allowed to gun down innocents where no one at the scene could legally stop him.

Here in Oregon, the predictable is happening. In the wake of the atrocity committed in a place where no adult present was allowed to be armed to defend the children, Senate President Peter Courtney is calling to enforce that deadly policy here.

The stupidity of this idea is staggering. The single thing that could have saved some of the children was an adult equipped to deal with an attacker. Now Courtney wants to guarantee that our schools will be prominently posted : “KILLING ZONE.” This is lunacy.

Of all the dangerous schemes the anti-gunners are planning to introduce in the coming session this is the one most bordering on madness.

Please take a moment to contact Courtney and let him know you will not stand for any effort to render our children as helpless as Connecticut’s children were. His contact info and sample email text follow. Then please use our automailer to send a message to the rest of the legislature.

Senator Courtney,

Your plans to disarm parents and visitors to schools is not just terrible policy, it’s horribly dangerous. It is hard to fathom, in the wake of the Connecticut massacre, why you would want to replicate their failed policy in Oregon. Did putting up a “no guns” sign save a single life? This proposal is a slap in the face to the parents and children of our state.

You and your colleagues are protected by uniformed and plainclothes police everywhere you go in the Capitol. Instead of guaranteeing that our children are unprotected targets, why not reassign the many State Police who protect you to schools around the state?

Or are politicians more important than children?

Yours,

12.17.12 TIME TO ARM TEACHERS

IT’S TIME.

It’s time to stop the denial. It’s time to stop listening to the bed wetters and start saving our children. It’s time to arm teachers and other school employees. Instructors are agreeing to offer free handgun training to school  employees. The Canby Rod and Gun Club was the first to make this offer. Others have made the same offer.

Below is an email Oregon House Representative Dennis Richardson sent to three southern Oregon school superintendents.  What followed was the predicable response.

“Medford schools Superintendent Phil Long, who received the email from Richardson, said he believes it’s best if teachers focus on getting children to safety if a shooting occurs.”

How’d that work out for the dead teachers in Connecticut Phil?

“Medford police Chief Tim George disagreed with Richardson, saying that it’s not the responsibility of teachers to make deadly force decisions on the job.”

What unspeakable nonsense. What choice do they have?

George said. “In crisis situations there are a lot of very complex things happening all at once and you have to constantly train for deadly force incidents.”

Then shut up and train them. Note to George, THE COPS ARE NOT THERE WHEN BABIES ARE BEING GUNNED DOWN! THE TEACHERS ARE.  Stop acting like you have a monopoly on the ability to engage evil people. That is everybody’s job! Connecticut tried it the gun grabbers way. They are now mourning their babies.

It’s time to arm school  employees. It’s time.

Prepare Now To Protect Our Students & Teachers

My heart aches for the families of 26 children and adults killed last week as a result of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, and I am frustrated over our failure in America to protect our school children and teachers from future attacks.

Instead of responding to the latest mass murder with calls for more gun-control, the real issue should be ensuring the protection of our children and educators from armed psychopaths. Currently, when a killer begins his rampage the only armed person in the school for at least five minutes after the sound of the first gunshot is the mass murderer.

Training in classroom lock-down techniques is valuable, but passive. Classroom lock-down procedures alone fail to protect the children and adults who continue to be murdered before the police arrive. A police officer in every school is not the answer; a police officer would be the first target of a shooter and the cost would be prohibitive for most school districts.

Lives would be saved by stopping the shooter. Seconds count when the police are five minutes away. It would be simple, inexpensive and enable immediate response after the first gunshot in a school was fired if two or three volunteers in every school (administrators, staff members or teachers), were encouraged to obtain additional training and practice in the use of firearms and were encouraged to have a firearm concealed on their person or locked in their desks. School district employees with prior military or law enforcement experience would be the initial candidates for this voluntary assignment. No one outside of school and district administration would know the identity of these volunteers.

In short, having armed and trained personnel in every school would enable immediate response with lethal force if and when the lives of our children and teachers were endangered by a mass murderer.

If this procedure had been implemented, the number of children killed in every school massacre from Columbine to Sandy Hook would have been greatly reduced. (The same would be true if it were implemented by the shop-keepers and mall personnel.) In Israel and Thailand armed school personnel save the lives of their children. In America the slaughter of our school children continues.

This is a call for our school superintendents, board members and principals to face and address the reality that mass murderers are armed with guns, knives, explosives, and, as we saw last year in China, even hammers. In 1998 students were killed in Oregon’s own Thurston High School. In Sandy Hook Elementary 28 are dead. The current passivist approach of Oregon’s school administrators fails to adequately protect our children and teachers. Candidly, if I were a school administrator or board member and, knowing how these mass murders continue to occur, if I failed to promote preparation for immediate, lethal response in case an attack were to occur in my school, the blood of multiple innocent victims would be on my hands. The time for passive hand-wringing is past; the time for parents, teachers and other concerned citizens to demand preparation is now.

12.12.12 BURDICK’S FIRST ANTI-GUN BILL ANNOUNCED

FIRST ANTI-GUN BILL MADE PUBLIC

As we predicted, the anti-gun bills are starting to show up in Salem. The first one by (of course) Ginny Burdick bans the “transfer” of magazines that can hold over 10 rounds.

This bill (and no doubt others) were drafted some time ago and we were expecting to see it when the session began. But Burdick has, not surprisingly, decided to use the tragic murders at Clackamas Town Center to market her bill. In a hastily drafted email to legislators, Burdick said:
“I invite you to sign onto the bill as co-sponsor. If you would like to sign onto the bill before next Friday’s deadline for pre-session filing, please contact my office at 503-986-1718, or come by our office, S-213.

While Burdick’s use of this crime to promote her agenda is shameful, it’s no surprise. Why let a good crisis go to waste?

We can assure you that this is only one of many anti-gun bills that will be coming our way when the session begins. We expect a ban on semi-autos, restrictions on licensed carry wherever school children are and attacks on preemption. Be prepared for a busy session.

12.11.12 A HOLIDAY WARNING

Holiday Warning.

If you have an Oregon concealed handgun license, you may well have (or might soon) receive a fundraising letter from “Oregon Gun Owners.”

If you choose to ute, be aware of where your money might go. “Oregon Gun Owners” has endorsed and uted to some of the most anti-gun legislators in the Oregon legislature.

“Oregon Gun Owners” supported Floyd Prozanski who has worked overtime to kill or mangle every pro-gun bill that has come to his committee. You can read all about it on our alerts page.

They also made a donation to House Rep Chris Garrett who voted to allow CHL records to be available to the public.

“Oregon Gun Owners” also sent a check to Senate President Peter Courtney who, in the last days of the last session, revived an atrocious anti-gun bill and tried to ram it through with no public hearings. You can read about that here.

But beyond their long support for gun control, “Oregon Gun Owners” are also liars.

For proof, take a quick look at their “Legislative Report” for 2012.

Two quotes from this report stand out. First:

“Since OGO had already worked to kill the bill once in its form as SB 1550, other groups thought it was safe to leave the final days of the session un-monitored.”

While it is laughable for OGO to have taken credit for killing anything it’s patently false that “other groups”  left the final days of the session “unmonitored.” In fact, SB 1550 was killed by Floyd Prozanski in a fit of anger because the House Committee Chairs would not go along with his games. You can read about that here.

See alerts from OFF here, here and here.

More interesting?  This quote ” However, OGO remained vigilant, and once the bill was re-introduced by Senate President Peter Courtney (D- Salem), we were able to respond immediately. Within hours we had met with House and Senate leaders, Committee members and legislative allies to ensure that this bill would not move.”

They then describe how the bill DID move.

“The bill moved out of committee with no conversation on a party line vote 3-2. Portland Democrats Ginny Burdick and Dianne Rosenbaum voted in favor of the bill with Eugene Democrat Lee Beyer.”

No mention of the money “Oregon Gun Owners” sent to Peter Courtney.

This Christmas season, when you face so many expenses, we think it would be wise for you to know  who is asking for your money.  If you really want to support anti-gun organizations, why not just cut a check to Ceasefire Oregon?
