Today’s hearing on SB 243 was everything you would expect and less.
Dragged out of the archives were the usual collection of dingbats and nanny staters to repeat and regurgitate their well practiced collection of platitudes and lies.
So much of what the McKennas and Okamotos and their red shirted harridans babbled was so painfully false and ridiculous that it made your eyebrows ache. But equally idiotic were the absurd comments of the “pros” from the various national anti-rights organizations.
Ignorance and arrogance (a dangerous combination) are to be expected from this collection of cackling hens, but things get a lot more dangerous when that level of stupidity is expressed by the legislators who will be ramming this bill into law.
House Rep Jason Kropf expressed sheer terror and astonishment at the idea that Americans could own “automatic weapons,” a concept he claimed he had never heard anyone suggest. Of course almost 100 years ago the US Supreme Court said in no uncertain terms that the only weapons protected by the Second Amendment were military weapons. And while we have faced decades of judicial anarchy and confusion since then, it’s on the record.
Kropf went on to say that Oregon law prohibits the ownership of machine guns. Oddly, this guy went to law school and can’t read law. Oregon law most certainly does not prohibit machine guns.
But to put on bow on the entire sorry spectacle, the hearing ended with House Republican “Leader”, Christine Drazan, firmly stating her intention to fight like hell to kill this bill. That, of course, is utter nonsense.
Drazan keeps telling people they need to “overwhelm” the Democrats with testimony. But of course the submitted testimony was overwhelmingly in opposition to this hideous attack on our rights and common sense. It’s a joke and a charade. There is only one thing standing in the way of this bill passing the House and becoming law. That is for the Republicans to grow a spine, stand up for sanity, and refuse to continue to participate in this hateful circus.
Under Drazan’s disastrous “leadership” that would appear to be less likely than Portland becoming tent free or the Department of Transportation telling us what they did with the money.
We believe there are House Reps who really want to do the right thing. But Drazan has been a disaster and she has to go. As long as Drazan is in charge of the House Republicans expect to see your rights chipped away piece by piece.
